Thompson Rivers University Geography Society (TRUGS)

I have been an active member of TRUGS since the Fall of 2015, and have recently been nominated as the new President beginning in the fall semester of this year. Currently I perform as the Vice President under our President Carley Rookes.

My duties in this position include taking care that members are kept up to date with when the meetings are, what happens during the meetings, and recruiting more people to join us on our hikes, volunteer work, fundraisers, events and socials!

I also assisted Carley in organizing the trip to Abbotsford for the WD-CAG in early March. Together, albeit mostly on her part, we applied for the TRUSU conference grant, organized the coach bus to transport everyone to the conference and the hotel arrangements, reserved where to eat, and tried our darndest to keep everyone in check for the duration of the trip!

I have attended and helped facilitate 3 bottle drives, 1 Adopt-a-Road cleanup event, many TRUGS socials to get to know our peers better, and 5 bake sales. We were also given the opportunity to help the sustainability office collect single use coffee cups for the Mugs for Hugs event in January.

Additionally, a large portion of fundraising for the conference came from a fundraiser dinner held at the place of my employment, Flavours of India, where I worked the event as a volunteer to reduce costs. I also was fortunate enough to talk to my boss and arrange the menu to accommodate multiple dietary restrictions.

How does TRUGS engage in Environmental Sustainability?

Adopt-a-Road initiatives: keeping our land and waterways cleaner by picking up trash!

Volunteering with the Sustainability office to take out and display the immense amount of single use coffee cups used every day (for the Mugs for Hugs event).

Bottle drives are not only a great way to earn some extra cash for our conference fund, but it also helps to keep cans and bottles out of the landfill. WE RECYCLE!
